Fellow Professor and GRA Eminent Scholar in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Math Guo-Wei Wei joined the University of Georgia in August 2026 as Professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Mathematics. Before joining UGA, he was MSU Research Foundation Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 1996 and is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Dr. Wei's research focuses on the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence, data science, and the biosciences, including topological data analysis, topological deep learning, and mathematical representations of data. He applies these methods to drug discovery, bioinformatics, mathematical virology, and biomedical imaging. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his group developed mathematical AI tools to track and forecast SARS-CoV-2 mutations and their potential impact. At UGA, he plans to apply mathematical AI to drug discovery challenges, including substance addiction.
